The Hospital Utilization Study (HUS) is a semi-annual report of inpatient utilization at acute care, community member institutions.

It is used primarily for planning purposes within hospitals, but has also been used by educational institutions, local health departments, and various health professionals as a source of utilization data. The Health Council provides public reporting on trends.

From 1962-1999, the Council has collected utilization data annually for this study, including hospital ID; admit date; age; sex; state, county, and zip code of patient origin; payor; length of stay; primary and secondary ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes; primary procedure ICD-9-CM code; and medical service categories. Please note this does not include MDC/DRG specific information.

The study was revamped in 2001 when the Council began a data partnership with the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA). This change caused the historical Medical Service Categories to be converted into The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (formerly HCFA) Medical Diagnostic Categories (MDCs) and Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs). In 2005, the study was transitioned to a web-based tool which can be accessed at http://gchc.ohanet.org.

Obtaining data: Summary data may be shared, but hospital-specific information is protected. Simple and detailed queries are subject to approval. Requests are subject to charge, depending on the amount of time spent generating the data request. The requestor name, nature of request, intended use of data, intended users, and final output are needed to determine approval of release. Please direct all requests to Dora Anim.
