The Timely Hospital Utilization Study (THUS) is a quarterly and monthly study that collects volume-based utilization data by hospital, including discharges, patient days, average length of stay, observation patients, inpatient and outpatient surgery, emergency department visits, visits to free-standing emergency care facilities, skilled nursing patients, live births, adjusted outpatient cases and certain cardiac procedures.

A semi-annual supplemental report collects data on number of patients in outpatient psychiatric and alcohol/chemical dependency (inpatient and outpatient), adult special care, pediatric special care, burns, medical/surgical (adult and pediatric) units, obstetrics, psychiatric unit, physical rehabilitation, hospital-based skilled nursing, hospice, and neonatal levels I, II, and III.

This study is volume-based and used primarily for planning purposes within hospitals. The Council provides public reporting on trends.

Obtaining data: In 2005, GCHC partnered with the Ohio Hospital Association to transition this study to a web-based tool. Summary data is shared, but hospital-specific information is protected and can be accessed at http://gchc.ohanet.org. Requests are subject to approval and charge, depending on the amount of time spent generating the data request. Please direct requests to Jason Bubenhofer.
