    The Council’s data services provide members with statistics and information valuable in planning for future health care delivery. Data submitted by participating members and collected by the Council can be used for quality improvement, planning, marketing, human resource and advocacy activities. Summary data from some studies is available to the community. See public reports.

    Affiliate Member Compensation and Benefits Survey

    A wage and benefits study for Health Council Affiliate Member organizations. The survey includes a base of approximately 20 jobs, benefits information and operations questions. The survey report is released to participants only.

    Flu Survey

    An annual study measuring hospital effectiveness in vaccinating hospital employees with the seasonal flu vaccine. The study measures the overall vaccination rates among hospital employees and lessons learned on how to encourage a higher rate of seasonal flu vaccinations. Information from the study is released to participants only.

    Timing: Conducted in February.

    Hospital Compensation Survey

    A semi-annual and annual wage study of job titles at participating organizations. Data elements captured in this study include wage/salary ranges, number of employees, and average tenure for selected positions. The Council partners with Integrated Healthcare Strategies (IHS) to conduct a joint survey with the Health Council and the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association. Information from the study is released to participants only.

    Timing: Conducted in January. A more limited Semi-Annual Compensation Survey is also conducted for member hospitals each June.

    Hospital Employee Benefits Survey

    An annual member survey providing information on such areas as medical and dental plans, retirement plans and personal time off benefits. The Council partners with Integrated Healthcare Strategies (IHS) to conduct the survey. Information from the study is released to participants only.

    Hospital Employee Diversity Survey

    An annual member survey providing information on such areas as the racial and ethnic background of hospital employees. Information from the study is released to participants only.

    Hospital Employee Vacancy/Turnover/Age/Retirement Survey

    An annual and semi-annual member survey providing such information as vacancy and turnover rates and employee age and retirement statistics. Information from the main study is released to participants only, however, a subset of some results are released publicly.

    Timing: Conducted in February. A semi-annual survey is conducted in August.

    Occupational Safety Benchmarking Survey

    An annual survey that assists members in improving their safety functions by providing them with benchmarking data related specifically to safety and workers’ compensation. Individual organizations are able to compare themselves with respondents as a whole and with subsets of respondents, including categories based on number of employees and type of institution. Information from the study is released to participants only.

    Security Benchmarking Survey

    An annual survey to assist hospital members in improving their safety and security patrols on hospital campuses. Individual organizations are able to compare themselves with respondents as a whole in measuring the types of security measures in place on hospital grounds. Information from the study is released to participants only.

    Timing: Conducted in June for the previous year.

    Timely Hospital Utilization Study (THUS)

    A quarterly and monthly study that collects volume-based utilization data by hospital, including discharges, patient days, average length of stay, observation patients, inpatient and outpatient surgery, emergency department visits, visits to free-standing emergency care facilities, skilled nursing patients, live births, adjusted outpatient cases and certain cardiac procedures. This study is volume-based and used primarily for planning purposes within hospitals. Periodically, the Council provides public reporting on trends.

    Obtaining data: The Council partners with the Ohio Hospital Association to provide a web-based tool. Summary data is shared, but hospital-specific information is protected and can be accessed at OHA Insight. For monthly estimates, hospitals can access the THUS Monthly Web Tool. Requests are subject to approval and charge, depending upon the amount of time spent generating the data request. Please direct requests to Jason Bubenhofer.

    Uncompensated Care Survey

    An annual review of indigent care provided at member hospitals. The Council, using data provided by its member hospitals, prepares an annual report of uncompensated care – the calculation of the value of medical services hospitals provide to those who cannot afford to pay for their own care and for which no payment is received. Summary data is shared.
